HVBF Executive Briefing Loyola Graduate Center Anirban Basu, Director of Applied Economics and Senior Economist R.E.S.I., Towson University presented the Briefing today. Anirban presented the framework of the economy from the defining period of Y2K to the emerging recovery of today. This was followed by an analysis of the position of Maryland in general and the Baltimore Metropolitan Area in particular. The low dependence on manufacturing combined with the benefits of a service dominated marketplace and the proximity to contractual and employment benefits radiating from Washington, create an extraordinary atmosphere for growth in Maryland. However, unemployment will continue to increase in the near future. This will lead to higher productivity and eventually job growth. The number of firsts in the nation’s statistics relating to recovery opportunities surprised us. The Greater Baltimore area is the least costly city in the United States for a tech company to relocate or expand. Anirban left us with a sense that Baltimore is the right place to be and this is the right time. The presentation was liberally sprinkled with questions from the attendees. Anirban can be contacted at abasu@resiusa.org. R.E.S.I. will be added to our membership. Their website is www.resiusa.org and can be reached by link to their name on HVBF website.
