HVBF Monthly Meeting - Facilities,
Security, Transportation Roundtable Host: Loyola College in Maryland Attending: Clare Berrang, MacKenzie / ONCOR International Clare Berrang opened the Roundtable by introducing Ray Andrathy, Director of Protective Services of member Dundar Armored to lead our discussion on building security. Planning for security should be done prior to beginning a construction project. Securing an existing building is much more expensive. Fire and burglar alarm systems should be monitored by UL certified central stations. Alarms should protect doors, windows, openings and elevators and should include motion detectors. Access systems provide a high level of security. Determining who gets access where can be done with ID cards, pin codes or biometrics or a combination of these. Cameras are an effective security tool. They can be monitored off site by computer through the Internet. Digital cameras will record the 20-minute time span before the activation of an alarm. Private guard services are effective but Ray warns that you only get what you pay for. This is not the place for the lowest bidder. For more information, Ray can be contacted at Dunbar at 410-282-6000 or email at 5145@dunbararm.com. Clare then introduced Lillian Bunton, Rideshare Coordinator Baltimore Metropolitan Council and Stephen Smith, Rideshare Coordinator for Harford County. Rideshare is of special interest to us. It provides a means to get cars off the road by pooling riders while offering employers a no-cost benefit to them that helps their employees cut commuting costs. Rideshare matches where you are with where you want to go. Employers can give employees incentives to participate by providing special parking places to participants. This also conserves space in your parking lots. Employers make their employees aware of the program. The employees make a phone call and sign up for the program…. a no-cost immediate benefit. For more information in Baltimore County contact Lillian Bunton at 410-732-6000 or email lbunton@baltometro.org; in Harford County contact Steve Smith at 410-638-3103 or email rideshare@co.ha.md.us. Special Reports: Bob Steffey, SHA, reports that work on the Timonium Road underpass at I-83 will complete in June 2003. Lt Lurz reports that laptops remain the item of choice for thieves. No other unusual activity. Craig Forrest reported that the outlook for traffic relief due to road construction is grim, indeed. The Secretary of Transportation for Maryland, on his annual tour, reports that the transportation trust fund has been raided in favor of the general fund and the prospect for continuance of this policy has already been announced by at least one of the gubernatorial candidates. This subject will be addressed at the Transportation Conference scheduled for October 3. Craig is passing the Chairmanship of the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board after three years of leadership to Harford County. Craig also advised that major decisions are coming on Maglev. |
