Steve Roth, chairman of roundtable, introduced Ruth Silverstone of M.T.A. who led our discussion this morning.

Ruth explained the closing of light rail service to Hunt Valley from January 5 until late 2005. Handouts and a visual presentation by Ruth described the details of the double tracking that will improve scheduling along the north end of light rail. The south end has just been completed. Busses will carry riders between the light rail stations while the rail service is suspended. Handouts included shuttle bus schedules. Employers should be aware that it would take longer for their employees to get to work than it did on light rail. There will be an adjustment period while employees and employers absorb the changes caused by the improvements. MTA will have marshals at the stations at the beginning of the change over to help riders. Staff from M.T.A. participated in the question and answer period following the presentation. Ruth is available to meet with companies and their employees to help with the transition. For more information, contact MTA at 410-333-2354 or email at doubletrack@mtamaryland.com. You can also visit the website at www.doubletrack.com.

Reports on public safety by Lt Marty Lurz from Precinct 7 and reports on highway construction by Bob Steffey of SHA followed the light rail discussion. Marty explained the use of off duty officers along the light rail line. Marty also cautioned businesses on security and to be aware of methods of gaining entrance by defeating electronic locking devices. Bob commented on construction under way including bridgework on I-83 over the NCRR trail and the Gunpowder River and work along I-83 from the beltway to Timonium Road.

Carol Salisbury, Facilities Manager for the Graduate Center provided the complimentary breakfast this morning.
