Lt. Marty Lurz began our roundtable with a report from Precinct 7. Crime in Baltimore County has hit a thirty year low. Vigilance on the part of our businesses and the proficiency of the officers in Precinct 7 has made Hunt Valley a safer place to work. Marty announced that Capt. Mark Warren, commander of Precinct 7, has been promoted to major and will be reassigned to command night operations. We hope that Marty will permanently fill the job of commander.

Marty commented on the loss of funding from MTA to provide off duty officers as security at the five light rail stops from Lutherville to Hunt Valley. This loss will become effective July 1 and affect the security of the bus routes while light rail is under construction until later this year.

Cockeysville Police & Community Relations Council will hold its annual Police Appreciation Day on Saturday, June 4 from noon to 4:00 pm at 111 Wight Ave, Cockeysville. A $ 5.00 donation will get you a great picnic.

Reminder: Domestic Violence Business Oriented Roundtable will be held on Wednesday, May 25 at 9:00 am at MBNA, 11333 McCormick Rd. Contact Officer Sabotka at 410-887-1827.

Jeffrey Saltsman, Acting Postmaster for Wayne Bender, Postmaster, at the Cockeysville/Hunt Valley post office led our discussion on postal service. Jeff emphasized the importance of correctly addressed mail and the use of zip+4. If nothing else is readable on the mail, zip+4 will get it to the correct destination. Zip plus 4 can be gotten from www.usps.com on the web by entering the address of the bmail you are sending. There is a local situation at Executive Plaza because zip+4 will not get mail to the destination suite. Glare from window envelopes can create special problems causing the computer to move from the window to the return address and return the mail back to the sender. Jeff noted that any mail delivered to the lobby of the post office by 6:00 pm will go out that day.

Other efficiencies include internet postage and customer mail pick-up programs. Jeff left us with the message that your postal issues will be addressed in an effort to improve efficiency. Mail pick up services are available for any business who receives fifty or more first class items each day. The objective for delivery to your office is by noon daily. Self service terminals are available in the lobby to reduce lines. A credit or debit card is all you need. Jeff does not recommend that you have personal mail directed to your office in the event of a later forwarding need. Account representatives are available to address your specific needs. Visit the website www.usps.com for many of your questions.

A question period followed. After the meeting I received the following email message from Jeff about his visit:

“Thank you for the opportunity to speak at the Hunt Valley Business Forum. I hope that my presentation was informative. One of the goals of the USPS is to improve service to our business community. We first need to establish what those needs are in order to better serve our community. The HVBF presents the essential link to do just that. It is my hope that we will be able to communicate further in the near future. In my normal capacity as Supervisor of Customer Services, one of my days off for the week is Wednesday. This conflicts with the time that the HVBF meets. At this point eMail will be our best line of communication. That address is Jeffrey.L.Saltsman@usps.gov.”
