Steve Stewart of the Baltimore County Department of Watershed Management and Monitoring provided an overview of the planning process and where we are to date. Steve reminded us of the roles played by county, citizens and businesses in maintaining the quality of water, most of which goes into the Loch Raven watershed and ultimately the drinking water for the greater Baltimore area. Impervious cover prevents water adsorption into the ground and frequently channels it to unwanted places. Business and industry can do several things to aide in water quality:

  • Retrofit culverts and other channels that have fallen into disrepair;

  • Provide porous paving;

  • Provide curb cuts to direct run off into desirable channels;

  • Remove concrete runs and replace with natural cover and buffers;

  • Landscape rather than pave.

Our next update from Steve will be at the September roundtable. In December the final plan will be presented. Steve can be reached at sstewart@co.ba.md.us
