9:30 except Capt. Marty Lurz and Jay Ringold of the County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management reported on a recently conducted emergency response exercise. Bob Steffey reported from SHA on road construction. For up to date information, visit www.marylandroads.com. John Markley, County Department of Parks and Recreation, began our featured discussion on recreational activities in the county. John described the land available in the county for recreational purposes. The Gunpowder Falls State Park is the largest area. Although the department has 300 employees, there is heavy dependence on volunteers. Corporate citizens are invited to become involved with their employees. Charlie Fenwick and Danielle Brewster described the history and activities at the unique Shawn Downs equestrian center. Public events are held in the best tradition of Maryland horsemanship. Major corporate sponsorship and citizen support provides charitable funds to GBMC Hospital. Tina Bianca, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, detailed the varied attractions of the 19.7 mile NCR Trail from Papermill Road to the Maryland-Pennsylvania line. Walking, biking and horse back riding are the most common activities in this very natural setting. Tina also talked about tubing in the Gunpowder River which is also one of the premier trout fishing streams in the eastern United States. Lori and Matt concluded the presentations with the history and activities available at Hayfields. Pam Salkowitz was not able to join us from the Oregon Ridge Nature Center but did provide literature on the facility. All presenters had hand outs describing their venues. |
