HVBF Monthly Meeting - Facilities,
Security, Transportation Roundtable Host: The Graduate Center at Loyola College Breakfast Compliments of Paul Obrecht and Blue & Obrecht, LLC Attending: Rich Anderson, S C & H Group, LLC Thanks to Paul Obrecht III of Blue & Obrecht, LLC. for sponsoring breakfast this morning. First time attenders were introduced. This meeting will be the last for Marty Janka who has recently retired from McCormick & Company. Marty is the former chairman of this roundtable, a director of the Forum and a long time advocate. We are grateful for his many years of service and wish him well in his retirement. Capt. Marty Lurz reported on burglary, robbery and auto theft activities in the Precinct. Unlocked doors and windows are still the prime opportunities for perpetrators to gain access. Marty warned of scam artists portraying themselves as BG & E employees to gain access. The elderly are particularly vulnerable. Marty reported on traffic issues necessary to make the Race for the Cure on Sunday October 14 a comfortable success. The schedule for race day has been sent to all businesses and individuals on the Precinct email list and will be repeated for HVBF members. Tom Hess of Sheppard Pratt Health System reported on the new facility being constructed on Pepper Road to serve the needs of children with autism. Sheppard Pratt is ranked sixth in the specialty of psychiatry in America’s Best Hospital, U.S. News & World Report. We are proud to have this facility locate in Hunt Valley. Chairman Paul Obrecht introduced Francis Smyth C.E.O. of Century Engineering and Monica Robertson of Hord Coplan Macht in our discussion of High Performance Green Buildings and Interiors. Century’s new corporate headquarters is an LEED-NC Gold Certified building designed by architectural firm Hord Coplan Macht. Francis and Monica led us through the design and construction of every phase from conception to completion. They reviewed the checklist for qualification for certification and explained the savings in operating cost and tax saving incentives that make such a project a practical reality. They estimated that the cost was about 3% more than for conventional construction. Green construction is good business sense. It reduces costs and enhances the value of the building. Although their decision to use only renewable energy cost about 10% more than the regular product, savings in operating costs offset the higher rate. For more information contact:
