Shirley Tyler moderated a discussion among our members on diversity programs. Although few had formal diversity programs, all were aware of the need to recognize the diverse nature of their work forces. All agreed that for a diversity program to be successful, senior management must buy into and lead the efforts.
Diversity is more than race and sex and includes a wide range of differences in the make up of our work force.
Gail Williams explained the formal program at McCormick. McCormick, from the top down, has a strong commitment to recognize diversity and has developed a program for each of its departments. They have used unique methods to help their employees understand each other. All employees must go through this training.
Susan Fine from PDP commented on their recent hiring of a sight challenged employee in their customer service department. Susan told us how fellow employees accepted and helped during the initial adjustment period. This has been a successful experience.
