Thanks to Al Copp of Woodhall Wine Cellars who was our host at the winery. What a great setting for the meeting!

Gail Williams announced that she is looking for a recruiter for her new department at McCormick. Gail also announced a job opening at Honeywell for an HR manager. Contact Gail at gail_williams@mccormick.com for more information.

Our topic today was Great Ideas Initiated by Your Company. Susan Fine began by describing the Emerging Leaders Program at PDP. The human resources department is the driver for the program. The program prepares staff for the next level by working in small management sponsored groups. The groups meet monthly for an hour to work on projects, which are later, presented to senior management for possible implementation. Projects take about a year to develop. Every other month there is a three-hour training session.

Mark Robertson initiated discussion on training on company time. Gail Williams stated that McCormick expects education courses to be taken after work hours. Some MBA programs that meet every other weekend are allowed on company time.

Mary Ann Reott stated that M and T Bank has incorporated a flextime policy to accommodate education and other responsibilities that has improved productivity. Mary Ann also described the mentorship program sponsored by the bank. A buddy system program was used during the recent merger to assist employee understanding.

Walter Schneider commented on continuous credit opportunities and obstacles.

Mary Atteberry-White told us about Eastern Savings Bank University. Eastern conducts weekly meeting opportunities to resolve current issues. All employees can participate. Periodic meetings allow any employee with questions to directly address senior management.

Eileen Edwards described KCI’s initiative to keep employees informed about their ESOP and how it works. Interactive questions in a game like format encourage employees to learn about the ESOP with prizes awarded for the most knowledgeable. During orientation, new employees participate in a Jeopardy-like game to learn about company culture and history.

Catherine Harris of Maryland Job Service introduced herself and the work of the service in soliciting job openings and assisting in employee pre-screening. Catherine can be reached at caharris@careernet.state.md.us.
