Chairwoman Eileen Edwards opened the meeting. This is her first meeting as our new chairperson. Eileen distributed a list of suggested topics for future meetings with the request to indicate the subjects of interest. Please bring your list to the meeting on November 6 or mail to Eileen at KCI Technologies, 10 North Park Drive, Hunt Valley, MD 21031 or fax to 410-316-7890. Eileen then introduced our host and leader of today’s discussion, Steve Thaler.

Steve Thaler of Hilb, Rogal & Hamilton led our discussion on Deferred Compensation programs giving us updates as a result of new federal legislation. Steve provided a package containing information about deferred comp plans and the issues affecting their implementation.

Awareness of the need for personal participation in retirement planning cannot be over emphasized. Employers no longer provide the amount of funding necessary but can provide the vehicles for individual participation at levels that more realistically achieve significant amounts dedicated to retirement. With an aging population, this becomes critical. A non-qualified deferred compensation plan can be carefully crafted to provide the opportunity to fill funding short falls.

Steve moderated a discussion among those attending. Individual circumstances were cited that indicated the need for specific solutions to these issues.
