Mary Atteberry-White introduced Mark Watkins of the Baltimore County Police Department to lead our discussion on identity theft.

Information that could lead to the theft of your identity can be gleaned from Internet sources, personnel department records, lost or stolen wallets, trash containers, your own mail box (never place outgoing mail in your mailbox. Use only USPS boxes), unsecured workplace documents and social security numbers collected from records and charts. Perpetrators with your personal information can then open credit card accounts, add names to your present credit card accounts, open store accounts and purchase products charged to you, open cell phone accounts and open bank accounts to withdraw cash. Some things you can do: report suspected theft to Mark at 410-887-21980; call 1-888-567-8688 to opt out of mailed credit card applications; get an annual credit report; restrict access to your social security number.

Perpetrators are generally well educated, in a position of trust, computer literate, personable and conspicuous consumers.

Mark then presented two actual cases describing the methods and results.
