Mary Ellen Judy introduced our facilitator for our meeting this morning. Melissa Shorey, an attorney specializing in labor law with member Whiteford, Taylor & Preston LLC led our discussion on the new FLSA regulations due to become effective on August 23.

Melissa provided us with a 22-page handout highlighting the new regulations and covered the most important changes. Included were the increase in salary threshold, salary basis test and safe harbors. Melissa discussed the effects of improper deductions from salary and “fee basis” paid employees. Duties test and executive exemptions have been revised to reflect the effects of the new wage thresholds.

The changes are the first since 1975 and are detailed. Failure to comply can result in significant penalties and inconvenience. For more detailed information or a copy of the handout, please contact Melissa at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston L.L.P.; 410-347-8746 or at mshorey@wtplaw.com.
