Chairperson Christine Eichler welcomed those attending and introduced Jason Pappas of EntreQuest to lead our discussion on Communication in the HR Role.

Jason got our attention through a little exercise that taught us to keep in mind the larger picture while carrying out a task, things are not always what they seem and communications may have more than one meaning. This was further demonstrated when five volunteers read the same sentence but with the emphasis on a different word in each reading that also gave a different meaning to each sentence. It really is not what you say but how you say it. Communication is 7% words, 38% voice quality and 55% body language. Your attention must be focused on the thoughts you want to convey and not on other matters. Preoccupation hinders effective communication. Technology has become an increasing factor in exacerbating our levels of preoccupation.
