Peter Guattery and Sharvari Dalal-Dheini of Whiteford Taylor & Preston guided us through the Maze of Employment Eligibility Verification for I-9 compliance. Employers pay a heavy price for failing to follow the correct process in determining whether a current employee or an applicant is eligible for work. Peter explained the history of the legislation and the government departmental framework for enforcement. The penalties are severe for the employer but the illegal alien, when discovered, can just move on to another employment opportunity. Peter covered each step and document in the verification process. Sharvari continued the discussion with an explanation of the role of Social Security in the verification process and action to be taken when a social security mismatch letter is received.
