Ed discussed the results of the periodic report done by Spherion on the emerging workforce. The results are not always what you expect. Tomorrow’s worker is more in demand, more diverse and more mature. One in five of the workforce will be foreign born and by 2012, 19% will be over the age of 55. American workers are more confident, ready for change and more demanding. Career management has become the responsibility of the worker and no longer the responsibility of management. American workers are more confident, more change ready and more demanding. 73% are willing to put careers on hold for family. 96% prefer a flex hour option. In 2007, 52% of workers are emergent, 8% are traditional and 48% are migrating from traditional to emergent. Will you be able to retain tomorrow’s emergent worker. Financial compensation is now #1 in driving retention. What a change from the traditional!

We stayed beyond our regular time to hear Steve Cole from The Arc of Baltimore tell us about the employment possibilities for businesses giving challenged workers an opportunity to do tasks within their capabilities. These workers are well trained and supervised and brought to your place of business and picked up after work. For more information contact Steve at scole@arcofbaltimore.org.
