Chairperson Dana Wiedefeld opened the first meeting of the Information Systems Roundtable with introductions of attendees.

The meeting was then turned over to Steven Kreit of Verizon for a discussion of telecommunications infrastructure in the Timonium, Cockeysville, Hunt Valley, Sparks area.

Steve distributed area maps showing the network in the York Road Corridor. He is responsible for planning for Verizon in this area and can be reached at email steven.t.kreit@verizon.com or at 410-393-0340. Steve’s office is at 99 Shawan Rd, Room 507.

Steve answered specific questions about service in the area. These included fiber optics vs twisted copper pair in the York Road corridor and DSL availability from Verizon.

The meeting then turned to a discussion of future program topics. Some topics for consideration were:

  • Government regulations
  • IT grants and funding for training
  • Internships available in IT
  • Upgrading telecom facilities to permit work from home or in community business centers
  • Network Security
  • Disaster recovery

K.G. Goshan, our host, invited all members to contact him for a presentation of his new web-supporting product. This can be done individually or as a regular meeting.

Your input into program content is vital. This is your roundtable and will be conducted with your interests determining the direction.

Please note: It was made clear to me that all I.T. people are early risers and meetings should start at 8:00 a.m. rather than 8:30. So be it. November 8 meeting will be from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, November 8 at the Graduate Center at Loyola College; 2034 Greenspring Drive; Timonium. The subject for discussion will be Disaster Recovery. If you plan to come, please reply to me by email or call 410-771-5560.
