Jim Beauchamp, Software Consortium, led us in a discussion focused on a business approach to innovative software solutions. According to one report, only 16.2% of IT projects are completed on time, on budget and with the intended results; 31.1% fail and are cancelled; 52.7% are over budget, over time and need adjusting to achieve intended results. To be a part of the 16.2%, you must carefully research the steps necessary for success and know the costs and benefits of each.

Complete support from senior management is the first step to success. Processes require Time…Resources…. Quality. There is a direct trade off among these. To alter any of these will alter the others.

A software solution can be built or bought as a package and customized. Careful analysis of the costs and benefits of both possibilities is required to assure success. The need to understand the business objectives while studying the possible solutions and their costs will prevent developing a solution that costs more than it earns.
