Barbara Levy of the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development opened the discussion.

If you were responsible for your I.T. department or you were an H.R. manager charged to hire I.T. personnel, would you look favorably at a program that would help you hire the I.T. people you need and pay for their training to your job specifications? Would you like the program to give you $ 2 for every $ 1 you spent on your new hire to train your current I.T. personnel? This is a no-brainer and the program really exists.

Metro Tech is a federally funded employer driven program being piloted in Baltimore and a few other markets to encourage companies to hire I.T. people that have been dislocated by lay-offs and down sizing.

The program allows you to recruit from Metro Tech’s pool of I.T. workers. Your choice would then be trained by a certified training company to fit your job needs. Metro Tech will pay you for the cost of training done by the trainer. Metro Tech will then give you
$ 2 for every $ 1 you spent to be used to provide needed training for your current I.T. employees. There are some conditions relating to salary level eligibility. How would this help your training budget?
