Chairperson Dana Wiedefeld introduced our discussion leader; Ken Wash of General Fiber Communications, Inc.

Our discussion began on voice over I.P. VOIP takes analog voice, converts to digital representation then converts back to analog. It allows travel on the same network as data and video reducing cabling requirements. Not all equipment can handle VOLP without a reduction in quality. VOLP will result in cost reductions. Call centers around the world allow 24-hour service by taking advantage of time differences. Carefully select service providers.

We then discussed WAN (Wide Area Network). WAN can reduce toll calls. Back-up re-routing capabilities are necessary. WAN cannot be used over the Internet without quality loss.

LAN was discussed with the note that wiring should be placed at the time of building construction.

Ken can be reached at kwash@generalfiber.com. if you have questions about this discussion.
